Hitting the Road

July 17: Goose Bump, Fish Lake, MN

We started our trip with a visit to the "Goosebump", land with a small cabin near Harris, MN owned by Annie's parents. A little maintenance work and a good start to our trip.

After visiting Annie's parents on the way out of town, we headed for the Pipestone MN area. On the way, we stopped at Mountain View MN to gas up and see the Heritage Village. (There are many of these history parks scattered around the interstates.) There we got a personal tour by one of the staff. Lots of interesting stuff, including a large Telephone Museum with lots of old equipment.

July 18-19: Split Rock Campground, Garretson, SD

We landed at the Split Rock Campground. A nice no-frills site by a small river, just a block away from a small main street with a couple local bars.

We visited the Pipestone National Monument (there's no monument - it is a monument) and learned about how pipestone formed and is harvested.

We also went for a hike at Blue Mounds State Park and enjoyed the prairie and cliffs, but missed seeing any bison.

July 20: West Bend Recreation Area, Hughes County, SD

After two nights at Split Rock, we headed toward the Black Hills, with a stop at the West Bend Recreation Area in middle SD. This sits at a man-made lake as part of the Missouri River. We were out of place here as almost everyone here had a huge RV and also towed a fishing boat behind that (!). At night the rope lights from every RV lit up the place.

More to come!
